I asked the same question a while ago in the computer

Subject: Re: IBM TCP/IP and Trumpet Winsock
Pardon me for replying to one post with yet another question about how do
I---? This situation has frustrated me for several months. I have a stand
alone system (486DX-66, DOS 6.2, WFW 3.11, 8MB RAM, 128KB cache). I have
not network at all. I connect to the Internet through a SLIP connection to
the University of Minnesota. I use their SLIP software which loads the
packet driver UMSLIP.com. I also have another Internet account through
mr.net which I access using Chameleon 3.11 (a sampler packaged with the
book, "Windows Internet Tour Guide." I can use the ftp, telnet and mail
programs packaged with Chameleon without much problem.
Where I run into trouble is when I try to use any of the other clients that
I have such as WinTrumet, HGopher, Mosaic, Cello and others that use the
Winsock interface. When I try to run any of these programs, I get the
message "Cannot Load TCP" followed by "cannot find virtual driver,
Winpkt.com---" and the program aborts. I have tried loading the Winpkt.com
in my config.sys file and in my autoexec.bat all to no avail. The main
difficulty seems to be providing the correct syntax to get it to load in
the rang 0x60 to 0x80 for when I run the config.sys and autoexec.bat files
one command at a time I get the message that the packet driver is on sector
F1738 or something like that.
What am I overlooking or doing wrong? Do any of you have a similar sytem
set up and functioning? Any and all help by E-Mail would be highly
appreciated.

Subject: WSAStartup() error
What is the proper way to initialize "things" in order to use
winsock? The very first thing I do is call WSAStartup() as follows:
err = WSAStartup (0x0101, &wsaData);
and err gets set to WSASYSNOTREADY, which means "the underlying network
subsystem isnot ready for network communication." Why is this happening?
I do have tcpip loaded. This really should work because I can run another
program which uses winsock right before my program and the other program
works fine but mine won't.
Can anyone help me?
Darren Henderson
P.S.: Does anyone have any source code of a program written using Borland
C++ OWL that utilizes winsock? That would really help me.

I bought it at B. Dalton in the Software Etc area. I also have seen it in Barnes & Noble.

I've been having the same problem. My SLIP server doesn't print any
characters until a couple of carraige returns "wake it up." Then I start
getting prompts. As far as I can tell, you can't do this with Chameleon.

The difference is, this server obviously asks you for a "Username:" as soon
as you connect. The original poster and I share a problem in that our
servers wait for a carraige return. Chameleon seems to get stuck if the
first command is a "skip." (-n).
If anyone has gotten something like this to work, please send me an e-mail
message. After this week I will no longer have an ethernet connection, and
unless I get a SLIP connection working, I won't be able to read news very
easily.
Thanks
